What Holds the Lantern?

Lantern

As the Irish poet John O’Donohue put it, “The question is what holds the lantern.”

Father Dan Groody holds the lantern for us by exploring life’s pressing questions in his podcast series: “Heart’s Desire and Social Change.” The most important inner need we have as we grow older is to be seen for who we are, not for what we’ve done. Father Dan helps us live in our questions of meaning, purpose, and identity, and reach for the highest in ourselves.

Carl Jung wrote, “The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you really are.” I have personally experienced the privilege of a lifetime as an invited guest on each of the podcasts in the series. As a Public Fellow in Notre Dame’s Institute for Advanced Study, and a resource in the Inspired Leadership Initiative, Father Dan and I have shared many inspiring conversations that have helped me grow more whole on my own spiritual path.

Are you a learner or a knower?

The future belongs to the learners, not the knowers. The wise elders who hold the lantern, today, are both learners (curious) and knowers (wise). And Father Dan is both.

But, this podcast series isn’t a one-sided conversation of younger people listening to Father Dan (or me) disperse wisdom. The series is about relevance as much as reverence. It blends perfect alchemy of both curiosity and wisdom. Curiosity holds the lantern. Wisdom distills what matters most and activates our questions into simple practices.

A Call for Listening

There is growing evidence that developing a mastery for navigating life’s transitions is a core skill for the 21st century. To navigate transitions and master change, we will need to “hold the lantern” of questions involving self-awareness, supporting relationships, spiritual maturity, and sustainable strategies.

These factors are at the heart of what is explored in the Heart’s Desire podcast series. While nearly everyone experiences the call for transition at various times, there is often little support for those who need it. We hope you will create time to focus on your purpose and well-being through these supportive and caring conversations.
